A military customer wanted a way to be able to shoot. ![]() "We started development in 2009, but most of the work was done in 2010. Director of Research at AAC, Robert Silvers summarized its development: BLK with ease, owing to the round's compatibility with the existing rifle platform. Today, many shooters and gun owners build AR-15s chambered in 300. It was developed by Advanced Armament Corp (AAC) in 2009 to 2010 for the military's M4 rifle. Officially called 300 AAC Blackout ( designated 300 BLK by SAAMI standards), this round is a 7.62x35mm intermediate rifle cartridge. We review ballistics and compare it to 5.56 NATO, we cover which parts are compatible with the AR-15's traditional 5.56/.223 parts, and what configuration - barrel, gas, twist rate, and buffer - is best for building a well-rounded, accurate, reliable gun. This guide breaks down 300 BLK in its entirety. This dual-purpose round can be fired as a subsonic or supersonic cartridge, suppressed or un-suppressed, without having to modify your weapon (if you build it right). The military's 300 Blackout round became one of the most popular in recent years, and you can easily build or modify your AR-15 with a 300 Blackout kit. If you can account for all bullets and they are all nice round holes you should be good to go with a suppressor (assuming your rifle is threaded concentrically). The AR-15 plays host to a few different calibers and cartridges. check at 50 and 100 yards and make sure the bullets are not keyholing or tumbling. If you still want to shoot subsonic out of your 308 win, then be sure to try whatever ammo and load you settle on BEFORE attaching your suppressor to the gun. Keep in mind that a 240 gr bullet at 1050 has a lot more energy than a 168gr at 1050. Most 300 blackouts come with a 1:8 or 1:7 twist barrel and will stabilize 240 SMK's at 1050 fps. There is much less volume and therefore no need for fillers or lightweight powder (trailboss). The 300 blackout uses a 223 case cut down and sized to hold a 308 caliber bullet. The blackout is designed for subsonic work and that is really about all it is good for. If you are serious about shooting 308 caliber bullets subsonic then you need a dedicated subsonic rifle chambered in 300 blackout. If you start out with the heavy end in front you help that some. If the bullet doesn't twist fast enough then the bullet will tumble so that the heavy end is in front. it is the RPM's from the twist that keep that from happening. ![]() The thing is when shooting a bullet the heavy end (back side on match bullets) always wants to go in front. Round nose bullets are less likely to tumble and many times match grade bullets will work as well if you turn them backwards as you load them. ![]() Many subsonic rounds will tumble immediately out of a 1:12 twist 308 barrel and even some bullets that are stable at 2600+ will tumble at 1050fps. ![]() Whether or not you can shoot a certain round will also depend on the twist of your barrel. There is about 50 something moa of drop if i remember correctly at 300 yards. I have shot subsonic 308 out to 300 yards.but that is a stretch. Kind of like using a top fuel dragster to go pick up groceries. I have done it, but it is far from ideal. The 308 is not ideal for subsonic ammo in any stretch of the imagination.
